Grilled Cheese Hot Dogs are a brilliant combination of two classics: grilled cheese and hot dogs! A buttery crisp hot dog bun filled with lots of melted cheese and a juicy grilled hot dog. Why choose when you can have both?
Two Classics, One Tasty Combination
I usually don’t ask the kids what they want for dinner because it almost always ends up in them fighting for their favorite. If I just make something, they’ll usually eat it and everyone’s happy.
Well, recently I made what ended up being a very delicious mistake in asking them what they wanted for dinner. Two of them wanted hot dogs and one wanted grilled cheese sandwiches. There was lots of begging and bribing from all of them as I was trying to decide which one to make. Both easy requests, so I can’t really complain, but I wanted everyone to be happy so it just dawned on me to combine the two and see what they thought.

Heaven Sent? Maybe!
No surprise, but they LOVED them and so did I! In fact, the first time I made these for the boys, they seriously thanked God for them in their prayers that night. Haha! They’re just that good, y’all! ;)) I can’t even count how many times I’ve made them since.
Great for a quick weeknight dinner and perfect for game day! I mean, what’s not to love about a buttery, crispy bun filled with lots of melted cheese and a juicy hot dog?! So dang delicious…
And so easy to make! You just roll the buns flat and spread the outside with butter. Don’t have buns? No worries! You can use two slices of bread. Place the bun, butter side down, on a medium-heated skillet and sprinkle it with shredded cheese. We like cheddar cheese or cheddar jack cheese.
Then you’ll slice a hot dog length-wise so it’s still connected, but will lay flat on the skillet. Place the flat side of the hot dog on the skillet along with the bun and let it grill for a few minutes until it just starts to brown. Transfer the hot dog to one side of the bun and sprinkle it with more shredded cheese. Close up the bun and let continue to grill until all of the cheese is melted.
And that’s all there is to it. Grilled cheesy hot dog goodness that’s so great you’ll never want to go back to a regular grilled cheese or a regular hot dog again.
Served with some ketchup and mustard for dipping and everyone will go crazy for them…

Description
A brilliant combination of two classics: grilled cheese and hot dogs! A buttery crisp hot dog bun filled with lots of melted cheese and a juicy grilled hot dog. Why choose when you can have both?
Ingredients
- 6 hot dog buns (I use top sliced buns)
- 6 hot dogs
- 3 cups shredded monterey jack and cheddar cheeses, mixed
- 6 tablespoons soft butter, for brushing buns
Instructions
- Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
- Open and roll each hot dog bun flat with a rolling pin. Spread the outside of each bun with 1 tablespoon butter. Place it on the skillet, butter side down, and sprinkle top evenly with 1/3 cup shredded cheese.
- Slice each hot dog lengthwise to where it’s still connected, but will lay flat on the grill. Place hot dog, flat side down, on the grill next to the bun. Grill for 2 minutes on the flat side or until it starts to brown and then flip over and let grill for another minute on the other side. Transfer the hot dog to one side of the bun and sprinkle it with 3 tablespoons shredded cheese.
- Close bun over hot dog and let grill until cheese is completely melted. Serve with ketchup and mustard.
50+ years ago a restaurant I worked in made a grilled cheese hot dog like this that they called a ‘Golden Dog’. Added lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise! Very popular.
Hi, Sandy! Nostalgia is so delicious! Thank you for sharing
DIFFERENT. GOING TO TRY. HUSBAND LOVES HOT DOGS.
Yay! I hope y’all enjoy! They’re so delicious!
This should have worked. I followed directions (although scaled it back for 2) but I don’t think I was using the best bun for this recipe. My buns burned and my cheese wasn’t even melted all the way. Still tasty and will try again with sturdier buns.
Hi, Kels! Ugh, I’m sorry. I hope you will try again. Did you roll the bun flat with a rolling pin? Sometimes, if it looks like the bun is cooking too quickly, you can lower the heat and place a lid over it for a few minutes to help the cheese melt. Hope this helps!
These are so yummy. Family enjoyed them and they are so simple to make. Yum.
Hi, Mary! I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed them!
Delicious could not be better! It is a me problem I just do not like cheese and sausage as a combination.
These are hotdogs
This is amazing/ give it 5 stars.
Hi, Linda. Thanks! So glad you enjoyed it!
Money is super tight right now, but I have tons of hot dogs in the freezer, always have cheese, and only had to buy buns. This recipe saved us from having plain hotdogs AGAIN. I recommend trying this dipped in tomato soup 🤤
I never comment on these things, but I just had to say thank you!!!
Thanks for sharing, Lou! I’m so happy to hear y’all enjoyed them and love the idea of dipping them in tomato soup. Yum!!
WOW! What a great idea! These are so good, and pretty darn easy to make!
Needs bacon. Also is great with steakums too.
Big hit with the grandbaby. Added grilled onions for the adults. Delicious and quick meal
I used the cheapest bun on the shelf. I flattened it with my hands. You just can’t believe how good this sandwich is. I made it on a Blackstone grill, but I would make these also in a cast iron frying pan or any nonstick frying pan. I’ve also made it without the cheese and put onions and relish on it. Delicious.
BOOM you should win the Nobel Peace Prize. This is so smart. They were so easy and good.
We made this on our Blackstone and it was double thumbs up from kids and adults alike! Thank you!
Making for the first they loved them, will make again.
Big hit with the grandbaby. Added grilled onions for the adults. Delicious and quick meal
Hi Tasha! So great to hear! Love the idea of adding grilled onions for the adults. Yummy yum!
Hi,
What skillet do you use?
Hi Julie! I use this griddle: https://amzn.to/39wWS7X
Hmmm, now of you can figure how to add chili to this and make it a foot long.
These were great. Made exactly as written except used all cheddar cheese. Yummy – going to try these on the BBQ too!
Add some precooked bacon for an extra special treat
I like to use the larger hamburger buns. Just cut the dogs to fit. Swiss is my favorite with relish and mustard, maybe some hot pepper and or pickle slices. Never make it the same way twice. Good for those times you get a craving for a dog!
Made these with bread instead of bun also good with a slice of cheese
Looks superb delicious, I am craving a grilled cheese hot dog right now.
Thank you for the great sandwich recipe
My husband loved it and said he will be asking for this often
Delicious and easy…what’s not to like?
Love it, Jackie! They’re a huge hit with all of my boys (and me!) as well. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Amazing website
Mmmm. We ate these ALL the time growing up! I crave them quite often…so good.
I can’t wait to try and may even add some chili to this! Yumm…
Too simple but looks too good
I’d like to say this is every kid’s dream, but I’m pretty sure it’s every adult’s dream, too! I LOVE this idea and cannot wait to try it out!
So true! Dream come true for all. Haha…so yummy! Thanks Karly! 🙂
Brilliant idea. I love hot dogs and cheese together but never thought of making a grilled cheese and hot dog combination. Love it.
Brilliant?
Exactly !
These were really good. Everyone in the family liked them and it was a good way to change up another summer hot dog night.
