Triangles of Delicious
Ah, comfort food. I can probably count on one hand the bad days I’ve had that couldn’t be made better by one of my favorite foods. And a great grilled cheese? Definitely one of my favorites.
One bite of a warm, crispy, melty goodness can turn my frown upside down! Those triangles of deliciousness have been my go-to since I was a kid. From Grilled Cheese Roll-Ups to Grilled Cheese Hot Dogs, or this summery Grilled Cheese and PB&J Snack Board, I’m always finding ways to incorporate this classic into our lives. For more melting cheese goodness, try my Stovetop Macaroni and Cheese recipe. YUM.
A Classic Grilled Cheese
The secret to getting the perfectly toasty grilled cheese sandwich is…wait for it…mayonnaise. If you’ve never tried it, here’s your chance! A swipe of mayo on the bread turns your sandwich a beautiful golden brown and gives it that amazing crunch that you’re craving.
Now, what goes inside? Well, that’s up to you. I’ve had some pretty elaborate grilled cheese sandwiches. Creative spreads. Fancy cheeses. But a classic uses only cheddar or American cheese. And today, we’re going for classic.
Grilled Cheese Ingredients and Supplies
(see recipe card at the bottom of this post for measurements and details)
Ingredients:
- Soft white sliced sandwich bread
- Mayonnaise
- Unsalted butter
- Shredded or sliced cheddar cheese or American cheese slices
Supplies:
- Large griddle or skillet
How to Make Great Grilled Cheese
- To make a great grilled cheese, first spread mayonnaise on one half of each slice of bread. Heat a large griddle or skillet over medium-low heat.
- Then add 1 teaspoon of butter to the skillet for each sandwich.
- Place a slice of bread, mayonnaise side down, over the melted butter. Next, top with sliced or shredded cheese and then another slice of bread, mayonnaise side up.
- Cook for 4-5 minutes on each side or until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden brown on the outside. Cut in half diagonally to serve. Voila! Perfect grilled cheese!
