What Do I Need to Make Edible Play Dough?

How to Make Edible Play Dough

  • Using an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together the powdered sugar and frosting until smooth.
  • It should be the same consistency as store-bought playdough.
  • If you don’t have an electric mixer (or want to entertain the kids a little longer while making it), you can mix it in a large bowl. Start mixing with a spoon and stir as long as you can and then use your hands to kneed the dough until smooth.
  • If your dough is too sticky, mix in more powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it’s smooth and of the desired consistency.
  • If the dough is too dry or hard, add a drop or two of water and mix until it is soft and smooth.
  • Divide dough to color it with food coloring. This is easiest done in the electric mixer. Just wash the bowl between colors.

Or you could mix them in individual bowls, but it gets a little messy because you need to use your hands so I would recommend wearing gloves.

How to Store Edible Play Dough

Once it’s been played with, I don’t recommend reusing it. Store clean, unused edible play dough wrapped in plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days. Allow to come to room temperature before playing.

  1. I used this to decorate a cake (actually beside the cake) for my grandson. I made an octopus. I used gel food coloring for the cake (body) icing and could match the tentacles around the cake to the icing by making them out of edible playdough and matching the color. Worked perfectly!!

  2. I think this sounds really fun, and its smart to call it “Kitchen Play-Doh” so little kids know only to play with it at home.

  3. I personally do not like the idea of edible play dough for with past experience with a few of children in my class was always trying to eat the dough one ate it and had to go to the hospital so we all decided not to use the play dough anymore.

    1. That’s great feedback, Leslie! Certainly want to make sure the children are old enough to know not to eat the play doughs that are not edible. We call this our “kitchen play dough”. All other play doughs are not to eat.
