You Can’t Top It
Y’all, I’m a sucker for streusel. It’s a very simple topping made from flour, brown sugar and butter that bakes up crumbly and sweet. I add it to muffins, breads, cakes, pies, fruit and bars before baking and the result is irresistible. Whether it’s my scrumptious Blueberry Streusel Muffins, Maple Cinnamon Streusel Bread, or a fresh Peach Coffee Cake, it just proves that everything can be made even more delicious with a streusel.

It’s also great baked on its own and then sprinkled over ice cream, fresh fruit, yogurt and puddings.

Ingredients and Supplies
(see recipe card at the bottom of this post for measurements and details)
Ingredients:
- Melted unsalted butter
- Granulated sugar
- Light brown sugar – you could use dark brown sugar for a richer more robust flavor to the streusel
- All-purpose flour
Supplies:

How to Make Streusel
- In a small mixing bowl, melt the butter.
- Stir in the sugar, light brown sugar and flour until crumbly.
- Let set at room temperature for at least 5 minutes or until ready to use.

Optional Baking Instructions
- To bake just the streusel, spread it out in an even layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

- Bake in a 350°F heated oven, stirring every 5 minutes, until golden brown and crisp, about 15 minutes total.

Quick Tips
- If your streusel is not crumbly, let it set, uncovered, at room temperature longer or in the refrigerator to dry it out a bit and then fluff with a fork. You can also stir in 1 teaspoon more of flour at a time until of desired crumbliness.
- If your streusel is too dry, stir in 1 teaspoon of melted butter at a time until of desired crumbliness.

Mix It Up
- Stir in nuts or dried fruits.
- Season with 1/2 teaspoon of spices like cinnamon or nutmeg.
- Stir in a splash of vanilla.
- Stir in dried fruits or nuts, such as sliced almonds, in this streusel for a Blueberry Almond Crisp.
