Description

Perfect for piping onto cupcakes, spreading on cakes, and adding that special something to your baked treats, this basic Chocolate Buttercream Frosting is easy to make and scrumptiously simple.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 to 6 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment (or large mixing bowl with a hand mixer), beat the softened butter until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix on low speed until combined.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and 4 tablespoons milk. Beat for 2 to 3 minutes until fluffy and smooth. Add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches your desired consistency.
  4. Spread or pipe onto cooled cupcakes.
