An Easy Twist on a Family Favorite

It’s an easy twist on traditional sloppy joes that is so full of flavor and delicious! Definitely one of our favorite casserole recipes! I’ve already added it to our family dinner favorites list and I know you’ll be doing the same as soon as you make it!

The boys get such a kick out of me saying Sloppy Joe Casserole! Not sure if it’s the way I’m saying it or just the name Sloppy Joe, but they crack up every time! And in between laughs, they gobbled it up! Yay!!!

What Do I Need to Make Sloppy Joe Casserole?

  • Lean ground beef
  • White onion
  • Green bell pepper
  • Brown sugar
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Dry mustard
  • Garlic salt
  • Tomato sauce
  • Ketchup
  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Milk
  • Melted butter
  • Egg
  • Shredded cheddar cheese

How to Make Sloppy Joe Casserole

  • Preheat oven to 400°F. 
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown ground beef. You can drain off the excess grease if you like.
  • Add the diced onion and bell pepper and let sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard and garlic salt.
  • Add the tomato sauce and ketchup and stir until well combined. Let mixture simmer over low heat while you prepare the topping.

  • For the topping, add the flour, baking powder and salt to a large bowl. Stir in the milk, melted butter, and egg until well combined.
  • Fold in the shredded cheese. 
  • Pour the meat mixture into a 13 by 9-inch baking dish or casserole dish (you can opt to spray the dish with cooking spray). Dollop the topping evenly over the meat mixture.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the crust is light golden brown. Serve and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 large white onion, diced
  • 1 large green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese

  1. I made this last night for dinner. We loved it. Being a former Wisconsin boy, I couldn’t resist adding a cup of sharp cheddar to the meat and a half cup to the topping. Didn’t need it. So good. Happy I found your recipe.

  4. Not sure what I did differently, but my topping/batter was way too liquid-y, not drop-able. I used 1 c flour, 1 c milk and 1 egg as the recipe is written (butter, cheese, and baking powder too). I double checked the recipe….but, I felt it was a cup of flour short (or a 1/2 c or more too much milk). Help!

    1. Hi Kirsten! It should be thin enough to dollop evenly over the meat mixture to cover it completely without have to spread it. The measurements are correct. I hope it baked up great for you!

    2. I had the same thing happen. I could have poured the mixture on top. It baked up fine but is not nearly as thick as in the picture!!

    3. I totally agree. I kept adding flour, up to at least 3/4 of a cup and then more baking powder b/c of the added flour, when I felt like it was the right consistency. It was delicious! A keeper with the added flour & BP. 👍🏻❤️

  5. Delicious recipe. Perfect as written. I used cup4cup gluten free flour & it was tasty. I did add some herbs de provence to the crust. I’m now cooking a turkey, boiling the carcass for stock & making a pot pie with the same crust recipe.
