Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie

Most people make their kids smoothies to give them energy and sneak in nutrients that they otherwise might not eat. Well, I definitely make the boys smoothies to sneak fruits and veggies into their diets, but I wouldn’t say my boys need any more energy than they already have. 😉

I actually love serving them smoothies because they’re filling and they keep the boys satisfied instead sneaking into the pantry for more snacks or begging for dinner at 4:30pm. Oh boys! I can only imagine how much food we’re going to go through over the years.

I have to say that my friend Deborah Harroun of the amazing blog Taste and Tell saved me with her newest cookbook: Best 100 Smoothies for Kids.

Best 100 Smoothies for Kids

I used to frantically search Pinterest for smoothie recipes every afternoon to mix things up and use whatever we had on hand. Now I have Deborah’s Best 100 Smoothies for Kids book a hands reach away and it always saves the day. She simplifies smoothies with fresh natural ingredients and every single recipe we’ve made has tasted great!

One of our favorites is this Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie made with frozen bananas which we always have stocked in the freezer.

I love Deborah’s tip to use underripe bananas because they provide great texture and a little sweetness without overwhelming the smoothie with banana flavor. Which means more chocolate and peanut butter flavors come through with each yummy sip. No wonder we love this smoothie so much! 🙂

The boys love taking turns browsing through the book and picking out which smoothie we’re going to make that day. They also love adding the ingredients to the blender and blending it smooth.

Like all of the smoothies in Deborah’s book, this smoothie is so easy and made with ingredients any chocolate and peanut butter lover would already have on hand.

It’s perfectly sweetened from the honey and bananas and oh so smooth! We prefer smoothies that use frozen fruit instead of ice so they’re perfectly smooth (instead of icy) like a great smoothie should be.

One thing I’ve started doing to make our smoothie making easier and save fruits from being wasted is freeze the ones we haven’t eaten before they go bad. So I’ll stock up on berries and bananas and other fruits early in the week that we’ll eat with breakfast or pack in the boys’ lunches. If the boys leave a few berries here and there on their plates or in their lunch boxes, I’ll add those to a freezer safe container in the freezer and then use that container of frozen fruit to make smoothies the next week. I hate seeing any food (especially expensive berries and other fruits) go to waste, so this has been a great way to get them into our systems instead of the trash.

With the great weather we’ve been having here in Dallas, we usually rush home from school, make our smoothies and head outside to drink them trampoline-side before playing the afternoon away. Soon we’ll be sipping our smoothies poolside and we can’t wait!

A huge thanks to Deborah for sharing her awesome smoothie book with us. It’s one of my most used cookbooks right now and with 100 great smoothie recipes to choose from, I know we’ll be using it regularly for years to come.

Some of our other favorite smoothie recipes from the book are: Secret Spinach Strawberry Banana, Peach Mango, Kiwi Strawberry, Double-Decker Tropical Avocado, Banana Cream Pie, and Pumpkin Pie. Yummy yum yum!

  2. Hi thank you for your post. I was wondering how you freeze the bananas? I do the same thing freezing the berries but have never frozen the bananas before. Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Amy! I do the same with the bananas, just in a separate container. Once they start to ripen, I’ll slice them and add them to the banana container. We use frozen bananas the most. 🙂
